I didn't want to risk having a huge draw on my power storage cause an explosion because the reactor suddenly jumped from my base idle usage of 100k/t to a million per tick. This reactor handles slow load increase well, but huge spikes isn't good for it. Ultimately I had to shut it down because I was tired of tossing a energy trashcan on one of my T7 power storage spheres to drain it. This was all manual with huge margins of safety (never running the reactor anywhere near 8k temp), I'm convinced a computer program could really make this reactor sing. Over the course of a few days, I had it running at 1.5m rf/t output with a 150k/t stabilization. FWIW, I found that by starting off with low generation rates (300k or so) and keeping the saturation around 50%, I was able to bump the reactor by 25k/t every couple hours.
